A Somali national has died while hiking Lion’s Head at the weekend.

Police and rescue teams were called to the scene on Friday night where the body of the 45-year-old man was found.

Authorities confirmed that the man collapsed while hiking.

The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness said: “Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness can confirm that we received a call to a collapsed patient on Lion’s Head on Friday evening. Wilderness Search and Rescue, including members from WCDHW EMS and rescue volunteers, rapidly responded to the scene. 

“Unfortunately, all attempts to resuscitate the individual were unsuccessful. We would like to offer our sincere condolences to the friends and family of the deceased.”

Police spokesperson, Malcolm Pojie, said they have yet to determine the cause of death after the man collapsed.

“Police registered an inquest docket for further investigation after a 45-year-old man collapsed and died while hiking along Lion’s Head mountain, Friday,  April 11.

“An autopsy will determine the possible cause of death.”

A friend of the man, who was at the scene, said he had been living in South Africa for 25 years and that most of his family resided in Caledon.
