Cape Town - When Monwabisi Galela saw big black clouds of smoke billowing from his community in Masiphumelele while driving his work delivery truck, the safety of his infant baby and girlfriend were the first thing on his mind.
Galela is among 1 800 Z-section residents who were affected by a devastating fire that destroyed 375 structures on Monday.
According to City officials, no person died or injuries were reported.
“I was driving the work vehicle doing some deliveries in another area a bit far from the area when I saw the smoke. Out of curiosity I drove closer to see what was happening and noticed that the shacks were on fire. It is really heartbreaking that we also lost almost everything while other people are left with nothing. I was lucky that my girlfriend was home when the fire started and she managed to save a few items.
“We are approaching December. Most people have been saving to travel for the holidays but now this might not happen because we need to rebuild and buy what we can,” said Galela.
On Tuesday the residents were clearing their plots trying to rebuild their homes.
Humanitarian assistance was provided by Gift of the Givers, Living Hope, Respond and other NGOs in the form of blankets and food.
The City’s disaster management officer, Sonica Lategan, said no person died or injuries were reported.
“Initial assessments indicated infrastructural damage to electrical overhead lines, water taps and toilets. Various City Departments are on site, including Electricity, Solid Waste Management and Water and Sanitation,” said Lategan.
Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis and Mayco member for Human Settlements Malusi Booi visited the areas for a first-hand account of the damage.
