THE Hawks are confident that a tireless investigation into the shooting of on-duty Constable Akho Ndzingo will link the man they recently arrested to the murder.

Ayazola Fulu, 30 briefly appeared in the Khayelitsha Court for murder in June last year.

Fulu was traced and arrested by the Hawks' Serious Organised Crime Investigation team shortly before his appearance at court where he appeared on other matters he had been charged for.

Fulu along with another suspect identified as Thembelani Gqum were earlier being sought by the police over the murders of five people and four attempted murders in Site B on March 26 2023.

Hawks spokesperson Zinzi Hani said Fulu could be identified and linked to the officer’s murder following a tireless investigation.

“It was reported that on 12 June 2024 at about 9.30pm, on duty, Constable Ndzingo, together with two of his colleagues were doing crime prevention duties with a marked SAPS Nissan bakkie.

"The SAPS van was driven by one of his colleagues when they approached the corner of Badi and Ndabambi street, Q Section Site B, Khayelitsha.

"The SAPS members noticed a suspicious unknown male at the side of the road, and then stopped to search him. When the members approached him, the suspect started shooting at them,” said Hani.

Constable Ndzingo sustained a gunshot wound to the chest above his bullet proof vest.

“A shoot out ensued between the suspect and police where the suspect sustained injuries but managed to flee the scene on foot. Constable Ndzingo was driven to Khayelitsha day hospital, Site B, by two of his colleagues, where he was declared dead on arrival,” said Hani.

The case has been postponed to April 25 for bail information.
