Bafana Bafana will reignite their ambitions for Afcon 2025 as they prepare to face Congo Brazzaville in two crucial back-to-back matches in Group K.

Currently sitting second in the standings behind Uganda, the South African side are determined to seize the top position during this international window, following a home draw against Uganda and a thrilling win over South Sudan.

Head coach Hugo Broos finds himself confronted with several pressing issues within his squad ahead of tomorrow’s clash at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha (7pm kick-off).

Here, we explore four critical areas that need his immediate attention before the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against the Congo...

Defensive reinforcements

Broos’ biggest challenge from the previous qualifiers has been his team’s fragility at the back, highlighted by glaring errors from Veli Mothwa and Siyabonga Ngezana that made headlines.

Notably, the coach has opted not to include either player in the squad this time around, marking a decisive break from the past.

Fortunately, regular captain and No 1 goalkeeper Ronwen Williams is back, reinforcing the defence.

Additionally, Mamelodi Sundowns’ Grant Kekana, who proved instrumental in Bafana’s bronze medal run in the last Afcon, is anticipated to anchor the central defence. This fresh defensive line-up could be pivotal for Bafana’s success against Congo.

Midfield injury crisis

Another pressing concern for Broos is the midfield injury crisis that continues to plague his selections. Key player and crowd favourite Sphephelo Sithole remains sidelined due to injury, removing a significant option alongside the solid Teboho Mokoena.

With Thalente Mbatha also out after a late fitness test, Broos faces a difficult decision regarding potential replacements.

He may choose between Sweden-based Luke le Roux or Chippa United’s Sinoxolo Kwayiba. This uncertainty adds an extra layer of intrigue as Broos seeks to maintain the midfield balance in the absence of established players.

Sundowns breakdown in influence

It is unusual for issues within a club to spill over into national team dynamics, yet Broos may find himself in this exact situation.

Both Mokoena and teammate Khuliso Mudau are currently caught in a web of instability at Sundowns, with their relationship with head coach Manqoba Mnqgithi strained.

This lack of regular playing time at the club level poses a dilemma for Broos, who must consider player fitness, while also ensuring that the chemistry on the pitch is preserved.

As Broos navigates these selections, his ability to harmonise a competitive atmosphere within the squad will be paramount to achieving the desired results.

Mentality

While Broos has successfully revitalised the national team, the squad’s mentality against lower-ranked teams remains inconsistent.

This has become evident in matches against formidable opponents like Morocco, Nigeria and Algeria, where the team has performed admirably.

However, the underlying concern lies in their capability to maintain that intensity and focus against teams they are expected to outperform, such as Congo. Addressing these mental lapses will be essential as he prepares his players for the upcoming matches.

As South Africa gear up for what could be critical fixtures in their Afcon qualifying campaign, addressing these four pressing issues will be crucial for Broos. The path to top spot in Group K hinges on Bafana’s ability to rectify past mistakes and emerge resilient during the clashes with Congo.
