Durban - Transnet Property has revealed that one of its tenants in Durban owes them in excess of R180 million in rent, rates, electricity and water.

The operating division of Transnet made the revelation after it embarked on a project, Operation Thatha Okwethu, in order to reclaim all illegally occupied buildings, stop any unregulated activities and deal with non-paying tenants in all its properties.

“The latest operation happened in the early hours of this morning (Friday) at the Durban Logistics Hub (formerly known as the old Durban Airport), where the main tenant owes Transnet in excess of R180 million in rental, rates, electricity and water, and has – despite numerous attempts and legal interventions– not paid what is due to Transnet,” said Transnet Property chief executive Kapei Phahlamohlaka.

He said Transnet Property was committed to ensuring efficiency and world-class property management practices. As such, asset protection was a key priority.

This manipulated image shows what the old Durban International Airport site would look like after its transformation to a dugout port. Transnet is negotiating a purchase price for the land with the Airports Company South Africa.

Attempts to reach Transnet for further comment were unsuccessful.

Transnet took over the old Durban International Airport site from the Airports Company South Africa for the development of its proposed Dig-Out Port in the South of Durban – a R75 billion investment.
