Durban — iSimangaliso Wetlands Park CEO says the Mkuze Airport will help improve the country’s economy through tourism.

iSimangaliso Wetland Park chief executive Sibusiso Bukhosini said the Mkuze airport will boost eco-tourism and give tourists quick access to the world heritage site and other draw-cards in the area.

Bukhosini said it was good news for the industry, especially the uMkuze Game Reserve, as tourists will be able to cut drive time so they can explore the region’s wildlife.

“In the name of eco-tourism, all the establishments including the private ones will benefit from the Mkuze Airport. We believe that eco-tourism is one of the big contributors to gross domestic product and this will help in building the country’s economy as we are trying to improve it,” said Bukhosini.

Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs MEC Siboniso Duma officially handed over the Mkuze Airport on Monday to the uMkhanyakude District Municipality, saying it will play a critical role in reviving tourism in the region.

Duma said the new airport will be able to handle aircraft carrying up to 100 passengers.

“The new airport will make access to the region easier. It will improve air connectivity through commercial airlines which will increase the number of local and international tourists to the region. This airport will not only stimulate tourism, but will drive more tourism product developments and job creation.

“We want to see more participation of emerging tourism entrepreneurs within the sector and projects like these will create more opportunities for those that have businesses that are within the tourism value chain,” said Duma.
