DURBAN - Two suspects are expected to appear in the Vryheid Magistrate’s Court today for drug dealing after they were caught transporting dagga worth an estimated half a million rand.
The dagga was in the back of a bakkie, hidden among cabbages.
Police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said the suspects were arrested by Vryheid police officers who were conducting an operation on Saturday morning.
Gwala said the officers had spotted a bakkie with cabbages next to Vryheid Junction.
She said the vehicle was pulled over and searched.
“Police officers found 23 bales of dagga hidden under the cabbages. The value of the recovered dagga is estimated at R500 000. Two suspects aged 30 and 43 were placed under arrest for dealing in dagga,” Gwala said.
Police reports have shown that drug dealers and drug traffickers have tried various ways of concealing drugs during transportation.
Last month, in September, Nadaragen Chetty, 58, was arrested for drug dealing. Police had received information about a suspect who was transporting drugs from Johannesburg to Durban. Ten packs of heroin powder with a street value of approximately R1.8 million were found concealed in the dashboard of the vehicle.
In June, on the N1 in Pretoria, police seized R400 million worth of pure cocaine weighing 800kg. The drugs were concealed in a ski boat.
In March, off the Saldanha coast, cocaine worth an estimated R583 million was found in three compartments of a fishing vessel.
Research has shown that traffickers will always find new and innovative ways to transport or deliver drugs. What was important was that law enforcement received credible information and intelligence in addressing the issue.
