DURBAN - A man was convicted and sentenced to eight years imprisonment, of which two years was suspended after he was found guilty of the possession of stolen property and theft out of a train.
Hawks spokesperson Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo said Robert Ndumo was convicted and sentenced by the Estcourt Magistrates Court.
“Ndumo was found guilty for possession of stolen property and theft out of a train,” Mhlongo said.
He said that on November 5, 2020, a case of theft was reported at Howick police station after Transnet discovered that televisions were stolen from the train.
A case docket was allocated to Hawks members from Pietermaritzburg Serious Organised Crime Investigation.
“(A) few days later, members received information about a suspect who was transporting the goods to Gauteng. A disruptive operation was conducted, and Ndumo was intercepted near Estcourt. He was pulling a trailer with 62 stolen televisions, and he was arrested,” Mhlongo said.
“Ndumo appeared in court several times until he was sentenced yesterday (Monday).”
