DURBAN – Police have seized various drugs worth more than half a million rand in the Point area in Durban.
Police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said on Wednesday the Provincial Drug and Firearm Unit seized a large quantity of drugs in their fight against the illegal trade.
“The team acted on information about drugs being kept at an abandoned building on Smith Street. An operation was put in place and it led to the recovery of 267 ecstasy tablets, 38 plastic packets of cocaine powder, 83 mandrax tablets, 10 pieces of rock cocaine and other various drugs.
“The drugs were recovered inside the ceiling boards on the roofing of the building. The recovered drugs are valued at R543 000,” Gwala said.
In August 2021, numerous police raids were carried out in the point area.
In one police raid, the same unit received information that drugs were being packed and stored for distribution.
The targets were identified and a take down operation was conducted leading to the arrest of two suspects, aged 24 and 32.
“The suspects were found in possession of 438.8 grams of heroin and 87 plastic wrappings of heroin. The drugs were valued at R68 000,” Gwala said.
In another operation, a 31-year-old man was arrested for drug possession after he was found with 74,2 grams of methcathinone and 171.8 grams of cocaine powder. The street value of the recovered drugs is estimated at R87 000.
In a separate bust, a 45-year-old was arrested in possession of 96 plastic wrappings of heroin and 176 pieces of rock cocaine. The total value of the drugs is estimated to be R20 000.
