DURBAN - A man travelling from Durban was caught with drugs in Beaufort West with an estimated street value of R2.2 million.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Christopher Spies said the strategic deployment of officers along the entry and exit routes to the Western Cape yielded positive results when drugs with an estimated street value of R2.2 million were confiscated on the N1 at Beaufort West around 6am on Thursday.

Spies said officers from the Central Karoo K9 unit conducted a vehicle checkpoint when they stopped a passenger bus. They proceeded with a search of the luggage compartment where they found a suitcase with tik inside.

“The find was later linked to a passenger on board. He was subsequently arrested on a charge of dealing drugs,” Spies said.

“Preliminary investigation indicates that the 37-year-old suspect was travelling from Durban and the consignment was destined for delivery in the Cape Metropole.”

He said the suspect was in custody and was expected to make his first appearance court appearance in the Beaufort West Magistrate’s Court on Friday for drug dealing.

He added that the Provincial Detectives Organised Crime Narcotics Section, which is based in Beaufort West were investigating the matter.

Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile, commended the members for their vigilance in removing the drugs from the streets. He also reaffirmed the commitment of the police to continue with the strategic deployment of forces as part of the ongoing Safer Festive Season operations.
