Durban — The Stand Out Foundation held an awareness campaign march concerning the 16 Days of Activism against violence towards women and children in the uMlalazi Municipality of KwaZulu-Natal.

The foundation was joined by the KwaNzuza Traditional Court in the Ophindweni area, Ward 19. Traditional leaders donned traditional women's attire, including doeks and pinafores, to show their commitment to the cause.

Chief Coordinator of Traditional Leaders, Induna Nkwanyana, described the training that preceded the march as an "eye-opener." He emphasised that opportunities for traditional leaders to participate in such programmes are rare, often leading to their neglect of crucial discussions about gender-based violence (GBV) and women's rights.

"This was the first of its kind to have such a workshop," he stated.

Sabelo Shandu, the iNduna yezinsizwa (representative of the youth), expressed deep gratitude to the Stand Out Foundation for the transformative experience.

"We now understand women's and girls' rights better," he said.

Shandu further added that as young traditional leaders, they are committed to disseminating this knowledge among their peers.

The founder of Stand Out Foundation, Zandile Mthimkhulu said that they conducted a five-day training session for traditional leaders focusing on Sexual Reproductive Health, GBV, HIV, human rights, and behavioural change.

"It is a groundbreaking and humbling experience for us to be able to conduct such a programme," Mthimkhulu said.

"To have Izinduna (Chiefs) agreeing to dress like women demonstrates their understanding of the programme's significance,“ she said.
