Every year as part of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign, activities are held to stop the scourge of violence against women and children.
Regrettably, the real message of this unfortunate challenge we face in this country, due to various reasons, often gets lost and the perpetrators are freely walking the streets and living an unrestricted life. There are many untold and undocumented stories of the horror women and children suffer daily, even in private homes. Most of them do not have the knowledge, and support to claim their dignity or human rights to the violence they suffer or endure.
Violence against women and children is a human rights violation that’s been carrying on for many decades. It is prevalent, universal and there are real faces and people behind the data and violence, but sadly it is not successfully being stopped.
Every version of cruelty against women and children, be it on the streets of Sandton, university campuses, townships, urban areas, in Gaza, or in any part of the world, we all need to walk the talk and make a real difference in the fight against all forms of violence, as passionately as we do in the fight against racism, xenophobia, economic and social imbalances, climate change, the occupation of Palestine by apartheid Israel and other negative imposes.
