Sheryl Lee Ralph is the cover star of “People” magazine's January issue and in an interview with the gloss, she spoke about her marriage.
The “Abbott Elementary” star shared how fun marriage can be when both parties have lives outside of their union.
We are used to seeing married couples live together but for Lee Ralph and her politician husband Vincent Hughes, their recipe for a healthy, happy marriage is living apart.
The couple, who have been married since 2005, live separately and that has helped them thrive.
"I'm very fortunate. The man that I am married to is Senator Vincent Hughes, seventh Senatorial District of Pennsylvania," Ralph said.
“You fall in love with somebody and you realise he's not leaving his career. He's not leaving Philadelphia. I'm not leaving Hollywood."
She said what has worked for them is visiting each other every two weeks because as much as she loves her life, she also loves seeing her man.
“He has his own life. I have my own life. He has his own real career, I have my own real career. He has his light to stand in, I have my light to stand in.
“He is not looking at me thinking about status or this or that. He's doing his thing. I get to do my thing,” she told the publication.
Their preference sparked a debate on social media, with many saying they wouldn’t cope with that set-up.
“Not for me, but I think marriage while living separately can work for some couples. It gives space, independence, and room to grow- all while staying emotionally connected.
“Every relationship is different. What matters is what works for both, not what’s ‘supposed’ to work,” said @youlovevally.
Some think it’s a genius idea to stay apart while married.
“I’m sorry, but the ideal marriage for me is two individuals living completely separate and fulfilling lives but still coming together to maximise their joint slays,” said @LucaGuadagnegro.
The way the Gen Z likes independence, I think we will see more married couples living apart in the foreseeable future.
