Mpumelelo “Sbindi” Mseleku, the son of well-known polygamist and reality TV star Musa Mseleku, is being investigated in connection with a murder case after a fatal shooting at the family’s residence in Umzumbe, KwaZulu-Natal.

According to KwaZulu-Natal police, a 25-year-old man was shot and killed during an alleged confrontation at the Mseleku home. The man, described in reports as an armed intruder, reportedly entered the property, demanding to see one of Musa’s sons.

A domestic worker raised the alarm, prompting Mpumelelo to reportedly confront the intruder

Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed that the intruder was shot multiple times, allegedly by Mpumelelo, during the confrontation.

“He demanded to see her employer’s son. The woman screamed for help; her employer’s son responded to her call and shot the man,” Colonel Netshiunda said in online reports.

Initially, police opened a case of attempted house robbery and an inquest. However, both have now been closed in favour of a full murder investigation.

“Southport police opened a case of attempted house robbery and an inquest which later closed, and a case of murder was registered for investigations,” Netshiunda added.

Self-defence may be raised as a legal defence, but it must meet strict criteria. The person claiming self-defence must prove that they faced an immediate threat and that the force used was reasonable and proportional.

If prosecutors believe Mpumelelo used excessive force, he could face a criminal trial.

The shooting has placed the Mseleku family under renewed public scrutiny. Best known for their hit reality shows "Uthando Nes’thembu" and "Izingane Zes’thembu", the Mselekus are no strangers to the spotlight.

Their shows explore the dynamics of a polygamous family life in South Africa, and Mpumelelo has featured prominently in both series.

In February, Musa shared a photo of himself and Mpumelelo on Instagram with a caption that read: "Sibindi uyabulala futhi uyaphilisa" – loosely translated as "Courage kills and heals".

The post has resurfaced amid the investigation."

Mpumelelo has not made a public statement. The police investigation remains ongoing.
