“The Magic Box” not only celebrates Disney’s 100 years of storytelling but it also marks a significant milestone for the South African theatre industry.
This is because it will be the first time that an entirely South African cast and crew have been involved in a major Disney theatrical production, giving the country’s talented actors, musicians and theatre professionals a platform on the global stage.
The show features the likes of Sunny Yoon from Bellville, Ghia Hough from Kuils River and Ashley Scott and Ché-jean Jupp from Plattekloof Glen.
They shared their unique journeys into theatre, highlighting the challenges they’ve faced and the passion that has kept them going.
In an interview with “Southern Suburbs Tatler“, Jupp opened up about the struggles in the industry.
“Pushing through many hardships and adversities such as lack of work, motivation or even just getting a ‘no’ from an audition, having this thick skin and ability to keep going is vital to make it.”
Meanwhile, Yoon, who starred in “Mamma Mia!” last year, is thrilled to be part of the production. “How lucky am I?” she added to the publication.
The play blends the classic Disney magic with a uniquely local touch as it combines traditional theatre with state-of-the-art technology. Audiences can expect impressive visual effects, beautifully crafted costumes and intricate set designs that bring iconic Disney characters and settings to life.
The music of “The Magic Box” is also a highlight, with a score that includes well-known Disney tunes as well as new, original compositions which have been specifically crafted for this production.
The ensemble cast not only showcases their acting abilities but also their vocal and dancing talents, offering a multi-sensory experience that brings the magic of Disney alive in a way never seen before in South Africa.
After its run at the Artscape Theatre and then Montecasino in Johannesburg, “The Magic Box” will tour internationally, further showcasing South Africa’s impressive talent on a global stage.

“Weightless”
From the creators of “Jakob” and the award-winning “The King of Broken Things” comes “Weightless”, a new theatre production that challenges how we view society’s marginalised individuals.
Directed by Michael Taylor-Broderick and starring Bryan Hiles, it takes audiences into the mind of Bill, a war veteran with a love for mathematics, cricket as well as a special connection to the moon.
Inspired by a real-life figure who struggled with PTSD, Bill represents those who are ridiculed for being different. At the heart of the play is his battle with inner demons but there is always a spark of hope — Bill’s desire to live “weightless” and believe in an “algebra of kindness.”
Taylor-Broderick, known for his emotional storytelling, brings his signature style to this production. Meanwhile, Hiles, a seasoned actor with credits in shows like “The Sound of Music”, brings Bill to life with empathy and depth.
“Weightless” is a story of isolation, pain and hope, reminding us of the human desire to overcome struggles and to find peace, no matter how heavy the burden may be.
Where: The Drama Factory.
When: Thursday, October 3, at 7.30pm, Friday, October 4, at 7.30pm and Saturday, October 5, at 3pm.
Cost: Tickets cost R180 and can be booked through The Drama Factory’s website: https://www.dramafactory.co.za.
“Thank You for Your Service”
This poignant physical theatre production is set in The Mother City's Gugulethu township.
It follows a young man who returns home after completing his army training, only to confront the realities of his family life.
He faces the challenges of caring for his ageing parents as well as a younger brother who has fallen into gang life.
Performed in isiXhosa and English, the play explores the trauma that soldiers and their families endure during and after military service.
