A true celebration of Afrikaans culture and heritage will be hosted at The Brightwater Commons on Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th April.
The event, to be called 'Afrikaners is Plesierig', will feature activities and entertainment for the entire family such as "boeresport", live music by various Afrikaans artists, braai demonstrations, and a strongman competition, amongst others. There'll also be exhibitions of art and crafts, not to mention the chance to sample an array of delicious traditional Afrikaans foods.
The chance to witness some of the most amazing feats of strength awaits visitors to the event on Saturday, when the centre will host its annual strongman competition. Participants, to include some of our country's strongest men, will flip 425kg tyres, lift 200kg logs, and carry atlas stones weighing between 120kg and 185kg. The competition will take place on the commons between 11am and 1pm.
Whilst other activities will include braai demonstrations presented by Weber, and "boeresport" activities such as 'tou-trek', 'eier gooi' and three-legged races; both young and old can sample an array of mouthwatering traditional Afrikaans foods in the promotions court, such as waterblommetjie bredie, bobotie, pampoen koekies, brandewyn tert, soetkoekies, and home-made gemmerbier but to name a few. For book lovers there'll be an exhibition of Afrikaans romance, children's, literary and cookery books presented by Lapa Uitgeewers.
Also taking place in the Promotions Court will be a fun pancake eating competition for people of all ages. The event will be hosted by Piekfyn and prizes will include Piekfyn gift vouchers.
The day will end with be a live performance by renowned Afrikaans artist Theuns Jordaan. The performance, to take place on the centre's promotions stage between 5pm and 7pm, will be free of charge to the public. And so that dads don't worry Multichoice will make sure that they don't miss one ball of the ICC Cricket World Cup and all the Super 14 action.
Sunday will begin bright and early with a braai competition sponsored by Weber. Watch as both amateur and professional braaiers pit their skills against one another in this exciting battle of the braai tongs. Whilst the mouthwatering scent of braaivleis fills the air, adding to the vibrant ambiance will be live music by Afrikaans artists DJ Ossewa, Charl Smit, Jaycee, dynamite twins Mar-net, EMI's Bianca Pienaar, Angie, and Wynand Windpomp.
Visitors can also enjoy the exhibitions of tasty Afrikaans foods, arts, crafts and books in the Promotions Court.
