Tips for parents to help with healthy eating:
* The messages you give your child about food are as important as the nutrients in it
* Get everyone to sit down at the table together in as pleasant and relaxed way as possible
* Most children like simple foods, with sauce or gravy on the side, and finger foods are easy for them to handle
* Try not to offer high fat salty snack foods too often as it may reduce your child's attitude for more nourishing foods
* Offer fruits, raw vegetables, cereals, yoghurt and breads as snacks
* Get children involved in planning, shopping for and cooking family meals from a young age
* Plan a week's meal together and let them help you make out the shopping list
* Encourage them to scrub vegetables and find and measure out ingredients when you're cooking
* If they take lunch to school, let them help to prepare it
* Encourage your child's school to adopt a healthy eating policy
* Suggest keeping treats to one day a week.
