Soothing tones, creative designs and inspired furniture featured at Decorex Cape Town as four leading designers crafted the exceptional Rooms to Grow feature.
“Rooms to Grow is a really innovative feature that gives visitors a look into the on-trend options available for the baby’s nursery, toddler, tween or teen bedrooms,” said creative director of Decorex, Anita Bloom.
“Decorating a child’s bedroom is a wonderful way for parents and children to connect. It’s a project that encourages the child’s input, with the parent’s direction, and allows both parties to express themselves in a truly creative way.”
In the Nursery
“I have chosen to incorporate white, natural wood grains, grey and a touch of rose gold,” explained Riyad Coenraad of Rad Kidz Baby & Kids Furniture. “I have specifically chosen these colours not just because they are currently trending, but to create a beautiful, ‘modern classic’ yet timeless nursery.

Having fashioned stunning furniture items for clients across the country, as well as the international market - Ireland, Australia and China included - over the past decade, Coenraad has seen many trends come and go, however, certain elements have remained.
“The classic style of furniture is coming back, although this really isn’t for everyone,” he explained. “People continue to select investment pieces of furniture that can be modified to adapt as the child grows – such as the cot which can be converted into a toddler bed. Overall, the furniture styles are fairly standard with some minor adjustments here and there whereas the colour palette and décor options tend to change quite dramatically over the years.”
Toddler’s Room
Clever Little Monkey incorporated natural elements into the Toddler Room décor.
Yulande Roxburgh of Clever Little Monkey, said that solid wood or wood finishes, with colour dips for furniture, are becoming more prevalent than ever. “We’re also seeing 100 percent cotton rugs and bedding incorporating soft pastels and natural references to bring children back to nature. For this one we’ve selected Beijing Moon for our colour scheme.”
Tween’s Room
Duett Kids’ Furniture has taken on the design of the imaginative tween’s room and have chosen to display its popular Loft Bed while also bringing texture and bright colours, selected from Plascon’s prism of colours – among them Turkey Dimple, Downy Duckling and Cabana.
Explaining this unique space, Kimberley Snook said: “Tweens want somewhere they can express their individuality, a space that they can mark as their own. The personality of the individual must direct the design, as this is their own space, reflecting their unique style and personality. It needs to be a place that achieves a happy medium – here homework must meet play.
“This creates a fun, fresh, contemporary space for an independent tween,” said Snook. “We have used our Duett range of kids’ furniture to create a multi-functional space suitable for play, sleep and study.”
Teen’s Room
For this innovative space, The Room Growing Furniture showcased their vibrant furniture range in a white and grey colour palette that is coming to the fore in design and décor.
“We feel that furniture should at all times be functional and practical in both small and large rooms,” explained Shirley du Plessis of The Room Growing Furniture. “Optimising space is always our consideration which is why fitted furniture is a preferred choice – it will create significantly more storage space due to its tailor-made qualities. We build furniture with a view of ‘expanding’ throughout the growing years as opposed to replacing items.”
