If you’re keen to get into modelling but don’t know where to start, South African model Cara Bez Geduld has a few tips for you.

A familiar face on TikTok, the bubbly content creator, took to the app to share her tips on how to become a model - a question she’s been asked many times.

Her advice is to join a modelling agency.

While you can try and do it independently, she advises that signing up with a professional agency is the best way to get jobs.

She goes onto recommend various top modelling agencies to consider in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban.

According to Geduld, Cape Town has the best agencies.

“Start out by applying to as many as you resonate with,” she adds.

When looking at agencies, look out for those that have models similar to what you look like and where you know you can possibly fit in.

After you decide on what agencies you are interested in, you have to join online.

They would usually request different types of photographs, your measurements and contact information.

She goes on to demonstrate the different types of poses you will have to submit.

Once you’ve applied online, it’s then up to the agencies to get back to you.

It’s at that point when you would start the interview process.

During the interview, they will discuss what the agency expects from you, contracts and discuss percentages when it comes to payments.

The agency will then take a set of Polaroid photographs which will become their first set of photographs which is what they send to prospective clients.

Then you can make a final decision about which agency you want to sign up with.

Once you’re officially signed you will have to do a test shoot which involves a professional photographer, stylist and makeup artist.

“Those will show what your actual shoots will look like at the end of the day,” she continues.

Once you’re signed, your agency will send you to castings. From there you will be selected for jobs.

Another way of being selected for jobs is when a client chooses you from your existing professionally shot photographs as per a specific brief.

Her final word of advice is that when you go for castings to go as naturally as possible. This means little to no makeup.
