Durban - Umgeni Water has announced that areas that are supplied water from the Avondale Reservoir will have no water supply or reduced water supply due to a shutdown of the pipeline that supplies potable water from Hazelmere Water Works to the reservoir.

The shutdown will take place from 6am on Monday, September 12, to 6am on Tuesday, September 13.

The water utility said the shutdown was to allow for the installation of a connection from eThekwini Metro’s Mamba Ridge Pipeline to Avondale Reservoir Pipeline.

Umgeni Water said that the installation will help ease the water shortage issues in oThongathi.

“The tie-in is being made to enable Umgeni Water to provide potable water from the Hazelmere Water Works to the Mamba Ridge Pipeline, which supplies the Mamba Ridge Reservoir in Tongaat. The Mamba Ridge Reservoir supplies parts of Tongaat, which is currently in the grip of chronic water shortage caused by storm damage to the Tongaat Water Works.”

Umgeni Water added that the tie-in work to be carried out will involve, first, isolating the Avondale Pump Station at the Hazelmere Water Works and the rising main to the Avondale Reservoir.

“The pipe will then be scoured, after which work will begin. This means that the pipe will be closed and no water can flow through it for the duration of the work. A significant amount of the work will involve welding.”

It apologised to consumers for any inconvenience caused.

“An assurance is given that every effort will be made to complete the work in the allocated time or before then.”

The following areas will be affected by no water supply or reduced water supply during the 24-hour shut down:

  • Ballito
  • Shaka’s Rock
  • Umdoni Ridge
  • Ocean Drive
  • Tiffeni
  • Avondale Drive, Ballito
