Durban - Residents living in the eThekwini Municipality are set to benefit from a partnership between the municipality and the Department of Home Affairs.

The three-year memorandum of understanding (MOU) which has been renewed aims to ease congestion at Home Affairs centres and to improve Home Affairs services.

“The city will deploy volunteers at Home Affairs offices to supplement the work of Home Affairs, to reduce queues at the department’s offices and work with communities to ensure that they collect IDs, birth certificates and other important documents.

“There is a long-term plan to bring Home Affairs services to Sizakala offices,” said the municipality.

In July, ‘The Mercury’ reported that the Department of Home Affairs accepted an offer from the eThekwini Municipality to assist.

Sipho Cele, the deputy city manager for governance and human resources, revealed they had made an offer to Home Affairs for a fully-fledged Home Affairs office that could be run with the help of the city.
