Durban – The National Liquor Traders have partnered with the SA National Taxi Council (Santaco) to promote road safety this festive season.

In a joint statement, the organisations said one of the aims of the campaign was to ensure long-distance commuters from the country’s economic hub of Gauteng reach their holiday destinations safely.

They said with the support of 100 Hlokomela road safety champions, they would be conducting vehicle roadworthiness inspections at key taxi interchanges in Gauteng before the taxis depart with their passengers.

Santaco president Abner Tsebe said: “Simple checks like these can help to reduce the number of road accidents by ensuring tyres, lights, indicators and brakes are in good working order. It also raises awareness of road safety and encourages drivers to be responsible on our roads and consider the safety of the people putting their lives in their hands.”

Lucky Ntimane, convenor of the National Liquor Traders, said that Hlokomela road safety campaign was a continuation of the partnership between his organisation and Santaco to address important social issues together as representatives of black-owned businesses that formed the backbone of township economies and communities.

“It’s up to us to step forward and build a better future for our communities. This includes keeping people safe whether they are visiting a tavern or boarding a taxi.”
