Durban - A head-on collision involving two vehicles on the M1 Higginson Highway near the Savannah Park off-ramp near Mariannhill left seven people injured on Tuesday.

ALS Paramedics Medical Services director Garrith Jamieson said seven people including two teenagers were seriously injured in the head-on collision just after 7.30am

Jamieson said ALS paramedics responded to multiple calls for assistance and arrived at the scene to find the badly damaged vehicles in the roadway.

“A total of seven people from both the vehicles had sustained injuries ranging from moderate to serious,” he said.

He said once the patients were stabilised by advanced life support paramedics at the scene, they were transported through to a hospital by Emergency Rescue Services (EMRS) and ALS Paramedics.

Provincial police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo said a case of reckless and negligent driving was being investigated by Mariannhill SAPS.

“It is alleged that on October 11 at 8:30, two vehicles collided in Mariannhill. The drivers and the passengers sustained injuries and were taken to hospital for medical attention,” she said.

In a separate incident on Wednesday, Emer-G-Med Paramedics spokesperson Kyle van Reenen said paramedics responded to the scene of a collision involving two light motor vehicles at the intersection of Stanger and Somtseu roads in the Durban Central Business District.

“Reports from the scene are that two people were treated for moderate injuries and taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital for further care,” he said.
