Durban - A 7-year-old girl died after she was allegedly run over by a vehicle on the P714 in Nqwayini, located near oThongathi in KwaZulu-Natal, while presumably walking home from school.

Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) spokesperson Prem Balram said residents contacted Rusa at approximately 2.36pm after they witnessed the incident.

“They witnessed a yellow Renault Kwid (registration unknown) veer off the road and run over the Grade 1 learner while she was walking on the pavement,” he said.

Balram said the driver allegedly sped off without stopping to render assistance.

“On arrival, Rusa medics located the female lying on the road. On examination, she was found to have sustained life-threatening injuries, which resulted in her demise. The deceased was a pupil at Makheni Primary School,” he said.

In a separate accident on Monday, IPSS Medical Rescue reported that a person died in a single vehicle accident on the KwaMashu off-ramp.

“Upon arrival of IPSS Medical Rescue, one person was declared dead by paramedics, and one person had sustained serious injuries,” said IPSS spokesperson Dylan Meyrick

Meyrick said IPSS Medical Rescue advanced life support paramedics worked to stabilise the patient before transporting the patient to a nearby facility for further care.

Police have been approached for comment.

Meanwhile, on Monday morning, just after 1am, Netcare 911 spokesperson Shawn Herbst said paramedics responded to a collision on the N2 South Bound by Spaghetti Junction.

Herbst said reports indicated that the driver of a light motor vehicle lost control resulting in the vehicle rolling over multiple times.

He said when medics arrived on the scene, they found an adult believed to be in his thirties, in a critical condition, trapped inside the car.

“A Netcare 911 rescue technician was called to the scene. Who used the Jaws of Life to free the man from the wreckage. An emergency care practitioner used advanced life support techniques to stabilise the man. Once treated, the driver was rushed through to a local hospital for the care he required,” he said.

Hours later, just after 7.30am, Herbst said Netcare 911 responded to a collision on Pioneer Road in Kloof.

He said reports indicated that a car and bakkie were involved in a head-on collision.

“Medics assessed the scene and found that four occupants from all the vehicles had sustained moderate injuries. The patients were treated on scene by advanced life support paramedics and, once stabilised, were transported by ambulance to hospital for further care,” he said.
