Durban – Ugu District Municipality said it is currently in the process of restoring water supply to areas where supply has been disrupted by load shedding and heavy rains.

Municipal spokesperson France Zama said on Monday that the municipality was working around the clock to restore water supply to areas affected by power outages and flooding.

“The unending implementation of Eskom power outages is having a major negative impact on municipal water infrastructure as it continues daily to cripple the water generation regime of our major water works in the district,” said Zama.

Zama said flooding was preventing technicians from completing repairs to a major pipe which runs across the Domba River.

“Technicians are, however, on site monitoring the levels of the river until conditions become safe to complete the repairs as this pipe break has disrupted supply of water to the northern areas towards Hibberdene and inland areas,” he said.

Water relief supply to the affected areas was being prioritised.

Zama said while there was a high risk of water supply interruptions in most areas across the district because of power outages, the municipality would continue to monitor its systems and water quality.

He said the municipality was doing everything possible to ensure that the impact on residents was minimised.
