Durban - Transnet said they have begun installing security fencing around its Durban port boundaries.

It said that the security intervention is to curb unrestricted access to the port and ensure safety of port infrastructure and assets within the port precincts.

Port of Durban manager, Mpumi Dweba-Kwetana said that the security fencing project will also ensure the safety of port users and port employees and reduce incidents of theft, vandalism and improve compliance with the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) code.

“The upgraded fencing boasts high-tech security features and gates that will provide security around the boundaries of the port’s North Pier, Point, Maydon Wharf, Bayhead, Kings Rest, Fynnland, Salisbury Island, Island View, and South Pier,” she said.

Dweba-Kwetana added that the security fencing is toughened with reinforced steel.

“We as the Port of Durban are pleased to see this project taking off the ground as we strive to ensure the safety and security of our customers, employees, infrastructure, assets and our tenants within the port boundaries,” she said.

Dweba-Kwetana added that the project was expected to be completed by March 2024.

“We are adamant that with the port being fenced with state-of-the-art features, we will see a decline in criminal activities, including but not limited to theft and vandalism which does pose a threat to our employees and tenants at large,” she said.
