Durban -Two children under the age of five died tragically and four others, including another child, were injured after the vehicle they were travelling in was involved in an accident with two trucks along the R617 towards Bulwer about 2 km outside of Underberg in KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday.

Underberg Emergency Medical Services (UEMS) spokesperson Kate Bodmann said its rapid response team and two emergency ambulances were dispatched to the scene at the Coleford turn-off at 9.40am.

Bodmann said when emergency service members arrived they discovered that two trucks and a car were involved in a crash.

“On arrival, crews found a single light motor vehicle crushed between two trucks,” she said.

She said UEMS paramedics assessed the scene and found six occupants of the car severely entrapped in the vehicle.

“Unfortunately on gaining access into the vehicle, two children under the age of five had already succumbed to their injuries,” she said.

Bodmann said another child, approximately five-years-old, had sustained critical injuries and was treated by the UEMS advanced life support paramedic on scene.

Three other occupants of the vehicle sustained moderated injuries, she said.

“All patients were extricated by the local Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma Fire Department and transported by UEMS to a nearby hospital for the further medical care they required,” she said.
