Durban - TWO people died after the car they were travelling in crashed into a petrol station on Stella Road in the Hillary area of Durban late on Saturday afternoon.

According to ALS Paramedics Medical Services, just before 5pm paramedics arrived at the scene to find total carnage.

“A single vehicle lost control before colliding into a petrol station,” said ALS director Garrith Jamieson.

Jamieson said a male passenger in his forties sustained critical injuries.

“There was nothing more paramedics could do for him and he was declared deceased on the scene,” he said.

He said another male passenger in his sixties was trapped in the vehicle with critical injuries.

Advanced life support paramedics worked to stabilise him while the eThekwini fire department used the jaws of life and other hydraulic equipment to try to free the man.

Jamieson said once the man had been freed, he was taken to a nearby hospital.

“However, on arrival at the hospital the patient went into cardiac arrest and despite advanced life support efforts he was declared deceased at the hospital,” he said.

He added that the events leading up to the accident were unknown. Police were on the scene and would be investigating the event.

Jamieson said the driver of the vehicle was arrested.

Police have been approached for comment.
