The 2025 Port Natal Bowls season kicked off in grand style last weekend as Durban Bowling Club hosted the much-anticipated opening rounds of the Men’s and Ladies’ Novice Singles tournament.

This event, the first of the new season, has set the stage for a year brimming with competitive spirit and emerging talent.

Enthusiasm ran high, with the games spread across five clubs to accommodate the impressive number of entries.

Under the blazing summer sun and soaring temperatures last Saturday, 116 men and 77 women – along with their committed markers – descended upon Durban BC, Durban Collegians BC, Northlands BC, Parkhill BC and Westville BC.

The increased number of novices participating highlighted the growing popularity of bowls, and painted a promising picture for the district’s future in the sport.

Northlands Bowling Club led the charge with the most male entries (15), while Umhlanga Bowling Club fielded the highest number of female participants (10).

Brian King, the tournament’s organiser, credited improved coaching programmes within the clubs for attracting and retaining novice bowlers.

However, he emphasised the importance of commitment to the schedule, lamenting the disruptive impact of last-minute withdrawals on the final draw.

“The dates are published well in advance. If there is a possibility of a clash, bowlers should refrain from entering,” he advised.

Among the participants, Amis Reddy of Durban Collegians Bowling Club stands out as a strong contender.

Last year’s runner-up, Reddy shared insights into his preparation for this year’s tournament.

“I’ve been playing more external competitions to gain experience,” he said, noting the improved strength of competitors.

“Both my games on Saturday were hard-fought, and moving forward in the competition, I expect the challenges to intensify.

“The monthly Newbies Tournaments have been instrumental in developing the skills and understanding of the game among the growing pool of novice bowlers.”

The tournament’s next stages promise more thrilling action. The remaining men will compete at Durban Bowling Club this Saturday.

For the women, the first 24 names in the draw will play at Durban Collegians Bowling Club, while the remaining eight should report to Durban Bowling Club.

The intensity of the competition is set to escalate as the field narrows and titles come into sharper focus.

Looking ahead, this Sunday will see the sectional play of the Port Natal Pro10 competition.

This involves 180 pairs, which are set to travel to various venues across the district, each playing five games to determine 30 section winners.

The fast-paced format promises a day of gripping action, and further highlights the vibrant bowling culture in the district.

As the 2025 season unfolds, the enthusiasm and skill showcased in these opening events affirm the district’s commitment to fostering talent and growth in the sport.

With promising emerging talent and seasoned bowlers playing alongside each other, Port Natal Bowls is poised for another unforgettable year.
