The 35-year-old cricketer's resurgence followed a disappointing showing at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in the US and Caribbean, where he struggled to make an impact. However, his recent performances against Ireland in Abu Dhabi – highlighted by two consecutive T20I half-centuries – have reignited interest in his capability and adaptability as a top-order batter.
The bidding war for Hendricks saw MI Cape Town face tough competition from the Pretoria Capitals, who were keen to add the dynamic batter to their roster. As the amount escalated beyond the remaining auction purse, it became a decisive moment when the Capitals exceeded R4.2 million, thus allowing MI Cape Town to clinch the deal.
Hendricks will join a robust batting line-up at MI Cape Town, which includes fellow Lions teammates Ryan Rickleton and Rassie van der Dussen.
MI Cape Town's coach Robin Peterson expressed his confidence in Hendricks, stating, "We know he likes Cape Town.
“We know he likes Newlands. It is a city that he enjoys playing cricket and we just thought it would be a perfect fit to be part of the squad."
But Hendricks wasn't the only notable signing of the afternoon. The experienced English paceman Richard Gleeson was snapped up by the Sunrisers Eastern Cape for R2.3 million, as they seek to maintain their dominance after winning back-to-back SA20 titles.
Moreover, the Sunrisers bolstered their seam options with the promising Okuhle Cele, who was acquired for a base price of R175 000.
In a strategic move, the Joburg Super Kings focused on acquiring all-rounders, successfully drafting Wihan Lubbe and Evan Jones for R175 000 each. The return of Jones to the Wanderers is particularly noteworthy, having recently made an impact with a blistering half-century for the Lions.
MI Cape Town also surprised many by welcoming local boy Dane Piedt back to Newlands for R175 000, signalling an intent to enhance their spinners' arsenal. Meanwhile, the West Indies’ fast bowling sensation, Shamar Joseph, will make his Betway SA20 debut with Durban’s Super Giants after signing for R475 000, where he will be mentored by the legendary Allan Donald.
The Capitol's efforts were not in vain as they solidified their squad by acquiring Marques Ackerman, the Dolphins first-class captain, for R800 000, adding a valuable top-order batter to their ranks.
Moreover, the rookie draft proved fruitful, as two former South African U19 stars — Tristan Luus of MI Cape Town and Dewan Marais from Paarl Royals — were selected, enhancing the prospects for the next generation of talent.
