Farnworth, Manchester - Teenage biker Reece Jefferies reckons he owes his life to a cake after landing on his lunch in a crash.

Jefferies, 18, was on his way to work on his Repsol replica Honda CBR125R last Tuesday when a car turned in front of him and he T-boned it. The impact flipped him over the handlebars and he fell on his backpack, which had his lunch - a Jamaican ginger cake - in it.

Although he suffered a fractured L1 lumbar vertebra and also damaged a bone in his pelvis, he's convinced the cake, which was squashed flat by the impact, cushioned his fall and prevented far more serious injuries.

"I was very lucky," he said. "The bag of food that I had might have saved my life."

Selfie

Despite his injuries, Jefferies was able to laugh and joke with paramedics and even take a selfie while strapped down on their stretcher.

He spent just three days in hospital, but will have to wear a back brace for at least eight weeks, and can't even get out of bed without help.

Although Jefferies had been riding since January 2015, he'd bought the brightly-coloured Honda only a month before. It would still start, he said, but the front of the bike was badly damaged, leaving him with a repair bill of several hundred pounds, which he was hoping to recover from the insurer of the car.
