Cape Town - Bikers, it seems, will grab any excuse for a party.
And if it’s all in aid of a good cause so much the better, as hundreds of riders turned out for Sunday’s annual Cancer Run, organised by Biker Charities Western Cape. There were at least 100 bikes at the meeting point in Wynberg of the Southern Suburbs mass ride, and as many again at the Bikers Church in Brackenfell for the Northern mass ride.
But the big surprise came when the rides converged on the end venue at the
Kensington Community Centre – the spacious parking area in front of the building was already almost full with the machines of bikers who’d ridden directly there, and a number of latecomers wound up parking on the surrounding streets.
FULL SWING
Inside the venue the Shaveathon was in full swing as dozens of riders gave up their crowning glory in aid of – and in solidarity with – cancer research, while many more had their hair sprayed in rainbow colours.
Children enjoyed the jumping castle, slush puppies and candy floss while their parents enjoyed more adult refreshments in a hall that pulsated with live rock music – but the focus was always on the row of chairs where the hair-clippers buzzed all afternoon. Bikers love a good party, but these riders never lost sight of the reason they were there.
