Cape Town – The next Mike Hopkins/Western Province Motor Club advanced riding school at Killarney will be held on the afternoon of Tuesday 9 August, which is, of course, Women’s Day.
Which is why entry will be free for all women riders on the day, while the men will have to pay the full fee of R450 per rider. All you need is a motorcycle licence or learners licence, helmet, jacket, gloves and boots – and your bike.
The riders will be placed in beginners’, intermediate and advanced groups, to remove the intimidation factor - no race bikes or illegally noisy exhausts are allowed - and the expert riders of the Western Province Motor Club will be on hand at all times to advise on riding techniques and bike set-up.
Registration opens at noon, at the new pits on the west side of the main straight; entry is via the gate to the karting circuit. Entries are limited, so promptness is advised – as is a full tank of petrol.
The (mandatory) safety briefing will begin promptly at 1pm, before the first group of riders takes to the track. The circuit will close at 6pm.
It’s no secret that women are generally more skilled riders than men; they need to be, since they lack the upper body strength to ‘manhandle’ the bike in and out of corners, and through sudden changes of direction. This is where you can practice these skills under safe and controlled conditions.
