Johannesburg - The 30th Annual 1000 Bike Show will be hosted by The Classic Motorcycle Club at Germiston High School on Saturday and Sunday.
This annual celebration of historic two-wheelers has grown from humble beginnings as a small display at the Carlton Centre in 1985 to what is now the largest dedicated motorcycle show in Africa. The show has moved venue over the years to accommodate more exhibitors and visitors and has for the past 14 years been held at the school.
About 450 classic motorcycles will be on display in the main tent with motorcycles ranging from 1907 to 1985. The British contingent will include Ariel, BSA, Norton and Triumph, while BMW, Laverda, Moto Guzzi, Kreidler and Zundapp are some of the marques representing the European line up.
The Japanese marques will also be there including a special 50cc display this year. The main field will host a Concours d’Elegance and a Retro display of cafe racers and bobbers. Exhibitor badges are awarded for each motorcycle on display, with trophies for the best marque and the best on show.
The visitor motorcycle park also becomes part of the show, with more than 1000 bikes in one place – hence the 1000 Bike Show. There will also be trade stalls, food stalls, a beer garden and a live rock band to entertain visitors.
The show is an ideal opportunity to call back to past and relive memories and see how The Classic Motorcycle Club strives to keep classic wheels turning.
Entry costs R60 per person, while under-16s enter for free. A cloth badge is included and all ticket holders are entered into a draw to win a SYM 125cc motorcycle.
Germiston High School is located on Rand Airport road opposite the Rand Airport, and the show is open from 8am to 5pm each day.
