Kimberley - They’ve had a few technical issues and broken a laptop, but the seven matric pupils who are driving 3500km in three tuk tuks in aid of charity say they are getting to know South Africa through roads less travelled.
Ayrton da Silva, Lebo Mota, Thomas Coward, Brenden Crawford, Michael Greeff, Sebastian Julicher and Ruan de Lange, all pupils at Gauteng schools, left Boksburg on “an adventure to change lives” on Saturday to raise money for the St Francis Care Centre. They are expected to arrive in Cape Town on 11 January.
PROJECT COLOUR
Called Project Colour, it is named after a similar adventure in India and took its name from the book Colour Blind Faith, which tells the story of Father Stan Brennan, who established an HIV/Aids and care centre.
On Monday Da Silva said the group were outside Kimberley and, despite a few difficulties and a laptop breaking after a tuk tuk hit a pothole, it had been smooth sailing.
He said the group had been touched by the reception they’d had from South Africans, with some driving along in their vehicles to “see them off” in certain towns.
The friends hoped the event would become an annual one, involving more South Africans, to provide a sustainable income for charities across the country. - Cape Argus
