Goodwood, Sussex - Ford has finally released full details of the 2.3-litre EcoBoost turbopetrol that rocks the new Focus RS, due for release in South Africa during the first half of 2016.
And rocks is the right word. It's fundamentally the same as the engine that was developed for the base model of the New Mustang, but tweaked to produce about 10 percent more power.
It gets a special low-inertia twin-scroll turbo with a bigger compressor that deliver considerably more airflow, and a much bigger intercooler, feeding less restrictive intake plumbing and a big-bore kerzorst with an electronic valve in the tailpipe that balances back pressure against noise, depending on the circumstances.
BIG NUMBERS
It revs to howling 6800rpm, delivering a claimed 258kW, with 440Nm on tap from 2000-4500rpm - and another 30Nm available for up to 15 seconds on overboost.
That Darth Vader grille is there to make space for the biggest radiator pack ever shoehorned into the front of a Focus.
It's also the first Focus with all-wheel drive, as well as the first with selectable drive modes and torque vectoring - including a special drift mode for controlled slides and a proper launch control.
So it's no surprise that it will make its first public appearance this weekend at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the hands of none other than the Hoonigan himself, Ken Block.
