Maranello, Italy - Ferrari has recalled 2600 cars globally because of a problem with airbags supplied by Takata - but this one has nothing to do with exploding inflators.
A Ferrari spokesman said on Monday: “The issue is a possible production defect in a component inside the airbags.”
The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on Friday that more than 800 of the cars were being recalled in North America.
The 2015 model 458 Italia, 458 Speciale, California T, FF, F12berlinetta, and LaFerrari models may be equipped with a driver-side airbag “that was improperly assembled” causing the airbag “to deploy in a rotated orientation,” the company reported earlier, saying there was a greater risk of injury.
AIRBAGS DON’T LINE UP
Apparently the airbags, which were supplied completely pre-assembled by Takata, including their leather trim, don’t line up with the steering wheel when installed, increaing the risk of injury in a crash even thought the airbags deploy correctly.
“This issue is not related to the other recall made by other manufactures for Takata airbags,” the spokesman said.
Ferrari's problem with the airbags comes amid an ongoing issue with defective Takata airbags, which have been linked to eight deaths and more than 100 injuries around the world.
Nearly a dozen automakers, including General Motors, Honda and BMW, are recalling 34 million cars in the United States alone to replace the inflators - the biggest recall in US history.
