Bold little Ssangyong for sun seekers

Forget that its name sounds like a disease, Ssangyong's new XIV-2 'convertible' concept shows that the Korean brand, now owned by Mahindra, is really getting down to business with some stylish designs.

That said - the concept itself, scheduled for its first public appearance at the Geneva Motor Show in March, is not entirely new but rather an open-top version of the XIV-1 concept from Frankfurt last year.

The company calls it a premium CUV (crossover utility vehicle) and it wants to stand out from the crowd by fusing the best attributes of a robust and powerful SUV with the style of an open-top sports coupé.

What sets it apart from the XIV-1 is a sliding soft top roof that can be operated at the touch of a button.

So will they be building this concept? You can bet the house on it, considering that the media propaganda describes the XIV as "a strategic model for the global market" and then goes on to describe the engine that will power it.

This will come in the form of 1.6-litre petrol and diesel engines that meet Euro VI emissions regulations, although not power and torque figures have been disclosed as yet.

Let's hope that the designers, who quite clearly penned the concept to catch the attention of the younger generation, doesn't water the styling down too much in its transition into a real car.

As for that stodgy name, apparently it stands for 'eXciting user Interface Vehicle'.
