Mini has being straying from its traditional comfort zone of late with a rapidly expanding model line-up that even includes a pretend-SUV that's only really 'mini' in name.
Luckily the latest expansion to the range is far more in tune with the marque's sporting heritage, even if it is the first ever Mini two-seater.
This new Mini Coupé, which has just been officially unveiled in production form, looks almost identical to the concept car of 2009 that shared its name, barring its flatter boot and a few other trim details.
Set to go on sale in South Africa in the fourth quarter of this year, the Mini Coupé might look every bit like the Mini you and I know from the front end, but moving to the profile, boasts some rather unique design traits. Most striking of these is a helmet-shaped roof and sharply-raked A-pillars, while a short and stubby boot lid (incorporating an active rear spoiler) completes the 'three-box' shape you expect from a coupé.
Hugging the ground more intimately for improved cornering, the Coupé sits 52mm lower than the standard Mini, its cause furthered by that aforementioned spoiler that pops out automatically at 80km/h to provide greater downforce at higher speeds. Mini has also improved the torsional rigidity by applying various strengthening methods.
While there's nothing new on the engine front, the Coupé does offer a choice of the four best engines available in the Mini line-up - although the South African range remains unconfirmed.
Topping the international menu is the 155kW John Cooper Works version, but buyers with a tamer disposition can also opt for the 135kW turbocharged Cooper S or the aspirated 90kW Cooper - all three powered by a 1.6-litre petrol engine - and there's also a diesel powered variant in the form of the 105kW SD.
Six speed manual transmission is standard on all models and all but the JCW are also available with a six speed automatic gearbox.
Cabin highlights include standard sports seats, a two-piece luggage compartment cover in a striking three-dimensional design and plenty of optional comfort and entertainment gadgets, including in-car internet.
