Isuzu Motors South Africa has teamed up with filmmaker Zandile Ndhlovu to inspire a culture of reading and of environmental awareness among South Africa’s youngest generation.

Ndhlovu, who is also a conservationist, social activist and South Africa’s first black female freediving instructor, has authored a picture book entitled Zandi’s Song, which shares a story about marine conservation and the importance of curbing plastic pollution.

Isuzu will donate 3,000 copies of this book to Grade 1 to 4 learners across five primary schools in the Eastern Cape and Western Cape.

In addition, the Qgeberha-based motor company will donate recycling resources to participating schools as well as additional educational resources such as workbooks and posters via the Pick n Pay School Club.

“With South Africa battling with low literacy levels at primary school level, it is an opportune moment to use a beautiful picture book to inspire reading as a hobby, and most importantly, expand narratives about the ocean, and raise awareness about ocean conservation,” Ndhlovu said.

“I’m incredibly honoured to partner with ISUZU on this mission, touching hearts and changing lives”.

Charles Coenraad, principal of Sea Vista Primary School, which is one of the participating schools, said the initiative would go a long way in educating young learners about environmental conservation.

“The combination of storytelling, resources, and hands-on activities will help instil values of environmental responsibility from an early age,” Coenraad said.
