As South Africa commemorates the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children, one detective in Limpopo is making waves with his relentless commitment to combating gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF).
Detective Sergeant BD Mthombeni, stationed at the Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit in Tzaneen, has spent the last decade ensuring justice for victims of sexual crimes. His efforts have resulted in securing 10 life sentences and 65 years of imprisonment for 14 sexual predators, a feat that highlights his dedication and skill.
"Teamwork and partnerships are key to ending GBVF," Mthombeni emphasised, attributing much of his success to collaborative efforts.
"Our collective actions help create a safer South Africa. Together, we must challenge negative social norms and behaviors that perpetuate gender-based violence."
Armed with a laptop to manage his cases on the South African Police Service (SAPS) Case Administration System (CAS) and a motor vehicle to expedite investigations, Sergeant Mthombeni has maximised the resources provided by the SAPS. But it’s his personal perseverance and commitment to victims that truly set him apart.
"I investigate the reasons behind charge withdrawals and, if necessary, liaise with the control prosecutor to keep the charges active," he said.
"In cases involving minors or elderly women, the Director of Public Prosecutions decides based on the merits of the case."
Mthombeni’s holistic approach extends beyond investigations. He prioritises making victims feel supported throughout the process and encourages his colleagues to do the same. His leadership among newly recruited detectives also sets a strong example.
"Teamwork increases the likelihood of solving cases," he said.
"I aim to share my experience and skills with new detectives to enhance our collective efficiency."
Mthombeni’s unwavering resilience is not just mental, but physical as well. He credits regular exercise for maintaining his focus, and encourages colleagues to adopt similar habits for their wellbeing.
He also calls on society to take an active role in breaking the cycle of abuse and violence.
"We must challenge cultural practices that perpetuate gender inequalities and abuse. Report all incidents of rape and abuse, especially those involving vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities," he urged.
"Become part of the solution. Act now to break the cycle of violence and abuse."
