eThekwini Municipality said despite a break-in at the City Integrity and Investigations Unit (CIIU) which houses sensitive documents about cases, it would not be deterred in its quest to root out fraud and corruption.
The City said the brazen robbery took place on Saturday, March 15, 2025.
They further explained that the CIIU is the office responsible for investigating fraud and corruption-related cases in the City.
eThekwini Municipality said that the matter has been reported to the South African Police Service (SAPS), with investigations currently underway.
"The motive of the break-in is unknown at this stage," the municipality stated.
City Manager Musa Mbhele has condemned the incident, calling on law enforcement to act swiftly.
"What is of great concern is that the CIIU office, which is tasked with the huge responsibility of rooting out fraud, corruption, and maladministration in the Municipality, has been targeted by criminals. However, we will not be deterred in our quest to root out fraud and corruption without fear or favor.”
The City recently arrested several employees on allegations of diesel theft, and asphalt theft among other misdemeanors. The matters are currently being heard in the local courts.
