A suspect who was wanted by police in connection with cash-in-transit robberies was shot and fatally wounded in a shootout with police in Umhlanga on Thursday afternoon.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Robert Netshuinda told IOL that police received information that the suspect was a passenger in a vehicle traveling on the M4 southbound.

"At the Lighthouse Road off-ramp, the vehicle was intercepted.

"The suspect got out of the vehicle and started shooting at the police and a shootout ensued.

"The suspect was shot and fatally wounded during the shootout."

Netshuinda said no police officer was injured during the shootout.

A case of attempted murder on a police official has been opened for investigation.

Earlier this month, a CIT heist on the N2 brought traffic to a standstill and the roadway closed for several hours.

A woman was killed allegedly by the fleeing suspects in the Chatsworth area.

That same day police intercepted the suspects in the Berea, Durban area, and one of the suspects was fatally shot in a shootout with police. In contrast, another suspect who sustained gunshot wounds was taken to hospital.

Police said one of the cars was also found abandoned with what appeared to be money bags.
