Members of the SA Police Service’s provincial flying squad in Limpopo have arrested two men who are foreign nationals in connection with possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle.

The two arrested men also face additional charges of contravening South Africa's Immigration Act.

Police were conducting patrol duties when they received a complaint about a silver Suzuki seven seater vehicle that was reported stolen from a woman in Polokwane Central Business District (CBD).

“Police, together with a tracking company, immediately started with a search for the motor vehicle until it was located at a residential area in Mahwelereng location, Zone 2, under Waterberg District,” said Limpopo provincial police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Stephen Thakeng.

“The motor vehicle was tactically approached and police found two males seated inside it. The duo were asked to produce the authentic documents regarding the ownership of the motor vehicle but they failed to produce them.”

Furthermore, police said the two men could not provide “satisfactory” responses about the origins of the car and were immediately placed under arrest for possession of a suspected stolen vehicle.

The two arrested men will face additional charges of breaching the Immigration Act.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects were illegal immigrants and also intending to travel with the motor vehicle to Gauteng province. A charge of contravention of the Immigration Act was added and the motor vehicle was also seized during the arrest,” said Thakeng.

“The suspects aged 37 and 51 are expected to appear before the Mahwelereng Magistrate’s Court on Monday facing a charge of possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle and contravention of the Immigration Act.”

Police investigations are continuing.
