A recent study by Numbeo, a global database providing quality-of-life insights, has ranked South Africa as the fifth most dangerous country to visit in 2025.
The ranking, based on a crime index evaluating 147 nations, places South Africa just behind Afghanistan.
Venezuela topped the list as the most dangerous destination, scoring 80.7 out of 100. It was followed by Papua New Guinea (80.3), Haiti (78.9), and Afghanistan (75.1). South Africa, with a crime index of 74.7, rounded out the top five.
The index takes into account various factors, including residents' and visitors' perceptions of safety during the day and night, as well as reports of violent crimes such as homicide, robbery, and assault.
Other elements, such as harassment, discrimination, and burglary, also contribute to the overall rating.
South Africa ranked the most dangerous country in Africa
Within Africa, South Africa holds the highest crime ranking, making it the most dangerous country to visit on the continent. Nigeria and Angola followed as the second and third riskiest African nations.
While South Africa remains a popular tourist destination, these statistics highlight ongoing safety concerns that travellers should consider when planning their trips.
