The case against five men accused of killing former Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa returns to the Pretoria High Court on Monday, more than a decade after his death shocked the nation.

Meyiwa was shot at singer Kelly Khumalo's family home in Vosloorus, on the East Rand, October 26, 2014.

The accused men - Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya, Bongani Sandiso Ntanzi, Mthobisi Prince Mncube, Mthokoziseni Maphisa, and Sifisokuhle Nkani Ntuli - face charges of murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

The trial, which began in 2022, has been marked by numerous delays and controversies. Defence lawyers have repeatedly questioned the state's case, arguing that the wrong suspects have been arrested while those present at the scene remain free.

The trial has hit several roadblocks, including having to start from scratch in July 2023.

It was first handled by Judge Tshifhiwa Maumela, but when he became too ill to continue, the case was given to retired Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng.

All the occupants in the house at the time of the shooting have never been arrested, including Kelly's sister, Zandie Gumede, her then-boyfriend Longwe Twala, Kelly's mother Ntombi Khumalo, and Senzo's friend, Tumelo Madlala.
