The University of Johannesburg (UJ) has awarded former president Kgalema Motlanthe an honorary Doctorate in Politics and International Relations.
This honour acknowledges his lifelong commitment to strengthening democracy, promoting good governance, and advancing social justice in South Africa.
Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Letlhokwa Mpedi, described Motlanthe as a leader whose work aligns with UJ’s mission of integrity, social justice, and advancing education. “His life’s work reflects the heart of what this institution stands for: excellence in service to humanity,” Mpedi said.
Motlanthe’s political career includes serving as South Africa’s President from 2008 to 2009 and as Deputy President from 2009 to 2014. Beyond government, he established the Kgalema Motlanthe Foundation, which promotes digital literacy and socio-economic development to equip young South Africans for the future.
During his acceptance speech, Motlanthe addressed the challenges of the modern era, warning against misinformation and urging leaders to embrace integrity and critical thinking. “We live in an age where noise often drowns out wisdom. Narratives fuelled by half-truths and digital manipulation cloud our understanding,” he said. “Yet, this is precisely when we must champion independent thought and principled action.”
He commended UJ for fostering these values, calling the university “a beacon where difficult questions are welcomed, and where the courage to think boldly moulds future leaders.”
Professor Mpedi noted Motlanthe’s long-standing connection to UJ, stating that the honorary degree formalises their shared commitment to progress. “While you have always been part of our community, today we celebrate your contributions with this distinction,” he said.
The ceremony coincided with UJ’s 20th anniversary, a milestone Motlanthe acknowledged, describing the university as both “youthful and visionary” with a limitless future.
Through his foundation and advocacy, Motlanthe continues to drive change in education and equality. By honouring his legacy, UJ reinforces its commitment to developing leaders who prioritise social progress alongside academic excellence.
Professor Mpedi concluded: “May former president Motlanthe’s example ignite the courage to question, challenge, and lead in every student who walks these halls.”
