Johannesburg - Kai Broom and Jarred van Alphen, two Grade 11 pupils at Treverton College near Mooi River, recently came fourth and fifth in the Rhino Peak Challenge in a time of 3:15:00. The driving force behind their grit and determination is a cause that is close to both of their hearts at the co-educational boarding and day scholar educational facility.

This is the continuation of conservation and preservation of the Drakensberg Mountains. Broom and Van Alphen are both keen adventure enthusiasts and already have several impressive feats under their belts.

They also completed the Drakensberg Grand Traverse in 12 days earlier this year.

During their latest expedition, the young duo managed to raise a whopping R50 000 in donations for the various conservation initiatives associated with the Rhino Peak Challenge.

But the boys are not done yet with this particular challenge. They now have their eyes set on a greater cause, rallying other high school pupils to pick up the baton and rally around the cause of conservation by applying to be ambassadors in the Rhino Peak Challenge 2023.

Broom and Van Alphen are hoping to see other high school teams on the trail next year as they hope more youngsters will contribute to this important environmental cause.
