Some of the leading athletes who will participate in Sunday’s Sanlam Cape Town Marathon carried the Peace torch at the City Hall on Thursday.
SA long-distance and marathon stars Hendrick Ramaala and Stephen Mokoka were joined by women’s athlete Nolene Conrad and race ambassador Elana Van Zyl-Meyer at the ceremony in the Cape Town CBD.
The Peace torch is part of the Cape Town Marathon’s RUN4CHANGE legacy programme, which incorporates the following Olympic values:
* Sport and an active society
* Women in sport
* Education through sport
* Social development through sport
* Sport for hope
* Peace through sport.
The Peace torch was brought to the event by the Sri Chinmoy Oneness-Home PEACE Run, which has visited 155 countries and run more than 632 000km since 1987.
Organisers say that the Sri Chinmoy Run “is a global torch relay that embodies humanity’s universal aspiration for peace, promoting international friendship and understanding”.
Some of the other Peace partners include Robben Island, and Nelson Mandela’s cell and candle, the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation.
