Splash and dash specialist Brad Tandy sprinted to a 50m freestyle silver medal at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in Australia on Tuesday morning.
The Rio 2016 Olympic finalist won South Africa’s first 50m freestyle medal since swimming legend Roland Schoeman’s silver from Delhi 2010.
Tandy finished behind Commonwealth record-holder Ben Proud of England, who slammed into the wall with a time of 21.35 seconds.
The South African star Tandy stopped the clock at 21.81, and Australia’s Cameron McEvoy rounded off the podium in third place with 21.91.
* On the athletics track in Gold Coast, Team South African unfortunately didn’t gain a medal to follow up the heroics of Akani Simbine and Henricho Bruintjies from Monday.
Antonio Alkana didn’t quite get going in the 110m hurdles, and finished in fifth position in 13.49.
Jamaican pair Ronald Levy (13.19) and Hansle Parchment (13.22) took gold and silver respectively, with Australian Nicholas Hough (13.38) claiming bronze.
Caster Semenya will take to the track at 2.04pm on Tuesday in the 1 500m final.
